Imagine getting on your horse and riding straight into a 3000 acre forest steeped in history and heritage. The Ashford Castle Estate, once home to the Guinness family and a millionaire’s playground in the 19th Century, plays host to underground Rivers, Caves, Castles, Towers, Abbeys and Ringforts.

The last High King of Ireland ended his days in Cong Abbey the remains of which can still be seen today. Natural outcrops of limestone provide refuge for many rare plants and wild creatures. Our trail rides are through forest paths and quiet laneways between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask. There are beautiful views of the lakes and the Connemara Mountains.

We offer trail riding by the hour. We cater for beginners and people who have never ridden. For families who wish to go on a trail ride with younger children we guide them on foot, leading the children’s ponies. Hard hats and jodhpur boots are supplied. All rides are supervised by our guides. Each rider is first introduced to their horse, given a little tuition and after doing some familiarising circuits of the arena sets out on the trail.
If parties of friends or families are mixed ability the type of ride will be to the standard of the least experienced rider. 

A two hour ride allows you to get a bit further off the beaten track and there is the possibility of exploring a ruined Castle.  For more experienced riders we offer half and full day trail rides.  A pub lunch can be organised as part of this package. Please contact us directly to arrange a half day or full day trail ride.  Also of note we have a weight limit of 16.5 stone, 105 kilos or 230 pounds.

For beginner children age 4 to 12 years old the best option is a pony ride which lasts 30 minutes.  We can take children for up to an hour if they are booked with adults in the party also horse riding.  Please do not book beginner children for an hour unless they are accompanied by adults also horse riding.

Ashford Outdoors – Activity Centre, Shooting School and Equestrian Centre is located on the magnificent Ashford Castle Estate, next to the island village of Cong, which is nestled on the border of Counties Mayo and Galway.

We have something to suit everyone. Ashford Outdoors has been offering equestrian, horse riding, clay shooting and adventure experiences in the magnificent Connemara region of Ireland for over 29 years.

We are open to the general public and offer outdoor adventure and equestrian activities to holiday makers and groups 7 days a week.

Ashford Outdoors has completed the Failte Ireland Safety Charter for Covid 19. All our activities are run in accordance with Failte Ireland, IAAT and WHO guidelines.
